SWord Art Online Hollow Fragment is a shady mess. I’ve tried to find a more elegant way to present this, but there’s nothing that sums up my feelings about the game better than this. Bad translation, monotonous gameplay and a Leisure suit Larry-esque pushed towards sexual conquest (without satire), Hollow fragment is probably the worst game I have played this year.
The game is based on the relatively popular Sword art online animated series and takes place after the first season. The story of the game is original and does not follow season 2. Unfortunately, a problem results as the game makes no effort to explain to you the events leading up to its debut, or the relationship to any of the returns. characters. Fans of the show will likely know this information beforehand, but it would have been nice to have some sort of little recap video for the weird person who might buy it on a whim.

The fight consists of furiously crushing the O button to trigger an automated combo. I’m reductive because there are other skills and abilities you can use, but I really never needed to get out of the occasional dodge or defend action. Just because you call yourself an RPG doesn’t mean you have a bad combat system. In its attempt to mimic MMORPG combat, the game forgets that many of these games have to follow certain design rules since they are in fact online. Because of this, they usually got a pass to have latency based action. Hollow Fragment Sword Art Online is not a real MMORPG, and as such shouldn’t have to conform to this design.
Sometimes you will come across NPCs being attacked by the various enemies in the game and you can choose to help them. It’s a nice little addition to the otherwise empty and boring world of the game, but it’s a superficial attempt to build the world.
You move around areas and dungeons fighting mindlessly against monsters and finding treasure chests working towards the area boss. Sometimes when you find the boss you have a chance to go back to town and get ready, but I didn’t feel the need to do that unless I just wanted to take a break from my game. is simply not satisfactory and the stakes to progress in the game seem very low.
Which brings me to the horrible location. Sword art online is voiced completely in Japanese, but that’s not the problem. It’s definitely not the first game to do this and I generally have no issues with it. However, the English translation is just bad. From misspellings to bad grammar, incomplete sentences and outright nonsense, localization is a complete garbage can. In 2014 there is absolutely no excuse for this and I have to wonder if this game had any quality control for it.

Hollow fragment emphasizes building relationships with your female companions using a thinly veiled premise of acquiring new armor and abilities. Really, it’s just an excuse to allow the player to go out with the girls and possibly sleep with them. It’s a type of sleaze that’s all too common on Vita these days with games like Ball girls, and Design II.
You see, I love anime and visual novel type games, so generally when there is scary fan service I can ignore it because it tends to be one-off content and it’s easily ignored. And even in visual novel games, when the gameplay is on the back burner, I don’t mind because the gameplay we get is usually still good. The problem with Hollow Fragment Sword Art Online is the fan service is the whole point of the game, and the gameplay surrounding it is just not good.
Listen, if you’re a fan of the show and really need to play it. Dark. Chances are, the things that bothered me probably won’t bother you, and that’s fine. But for anyone who is even curious, stay away. Stay away.
