Palaro Board Game Cafe (Taytay, Rizal)

A bit of a late post.  Three months ago -- when my sister, my nieces and I left Pixcone one night, we spotted another cafe just a couple a blocks from it.

My nieces got so excited but then I told them we would be paying it a visit very soon.

And sure enough, we did, one Friday night last March. I wanted to treat them again as a reward for doing well in school (my older niece graduated with honors while my younger niece ended her school year as a top 6 student in their class).

What we ordered:

🔹Pulled Pork Nachos (₱119) - I've never had (or heard of) nachos with pork, so I ordered this by curiosity. Besides, we also wanted nachos as the ideal pica-pica while playing their board games. It turned out to be not exactly a kid-friendly nachos: it looked pretty and colorful, but it was also topped by chopped raw white onions. And obviously, kids don't like anything onion-y, so my nieces removed the onions first before popping the nachos into their mouths. I told them that I would order something else just for them instead.

The cheese sauce tasted weird to me -- it was more on the sweeter side. Then combined with the pungency of the onion? Don't get me wrong, I love onions, but the combination of flavors just didn't jibe.

🔸Cheesy Fries (₱99) - Topped with bacon bits. This is the more decent dish compared to their nachos. The kids loved anything with fries and cheese!

Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino (₱120) - Refreshing enough drink.

Nutella Milkshake (₱150) - It tasted kind of bland, but the Nutella was there. What I liked about their frappes though were the silky whipped creams! :)

Smores Milkshake (₱150) - My niece outdid my own drink when she ordered this one. Hahahaha. Obviously, she loved it! No need for dessert. She and my younger niece shared this crazy milkshake!

Peppermint Coffee (₱65) - Sorry, no picture. My sister's order. She needed a hot drink because she was suffering from colds, despite the hot weather.

One thing that I'll always remember about this cafe: the music's too LOUD! (tapos modern dance/isprikitik techno pa tugtog) Yes, I understand that it's a place where you can actually play board games and have fun. A little music on the background will pump things up and make the game plays more alive, but not this loud. How could we communicate and hear each other and concentrate on the games when the music's almost ear-shattering? I brought my nieces along there and one of them found the din discomforting. LOL it's not a club, it's a cafe where you're supposed to feel cozy while having a munch and playing board games.

In hindsight, we should have taken the outdoor seats. But because the it was sweltering, we chose to dine and play board games inside.

Some of them were quite complicated to follow at one game play (now it's not the cafe's fault anymore lol); I think you'd have to stay longer inside the cafe and be able to play all those board games because it will involve reading the instructions (especially if you play these games for the first time).

We played Jenga, Uno Stacko, Scrabble, Lift It and Snakes and Ladders (my younger niece learned to play the last game for the first time and she enjoyed it!). I also played with my niece with the big magnetic drawing toy. Some of the toys were not kept properly. We found a 500 Monopoly bill inside the Snakes and Ladders box, and some pieces of the Lift It were missing.

Board games and other toys are quite limited -- they should add more toys so that customers will have more choices. I think they started off as a regular cafe and then added the "board games" thingie as an afterthought (correct me if I'm wrong though), so the range of toys is not that wide yet.

The experience overall, to me, was a bit disappointing mainly because of the noise, but my nieces had fun and that's more important. :)

I think this cafe still deserves another visit to try more of their food. People who have gone there have thrown many raves for their food, especially their main dishes, so I will definitely go for that on the next visit (hopefully no more ear-shattering music). I was a bit underwhelmed by their pica-picas, so I hope that their other stuff might be good!

What I like about this cafe is that it encourages and relives the fun of playing board games, when people nowadays are immersing themselves in their smartphones and tablets. It brings families and friends closer together, and learn something new that they don't get from playing online games.
